Abstract

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a condition of increasing clinical and economic importance, being the most commonly encountered tachyarrhythmia in clinical practice.[1][2] Of note, AF currently accounts for 1% of all National Health Service expenditure in the United Kingdom.[3] The prevalence of AF is strongly age dependent, affecting 5% of individuals older than 65 years and nearly 10% of those aged >80 years.[4][5] Given the clear trend towards an increasingly aging population, the improved survival of patients of cardiovascular disease and the predominance of AF among older patients, the health care burden of AF is set to dramatically increase.[6] Indeed, hospitalization rates for AF have increased by 2-3 fold in recent years [7] and the prevalence of AF is projected to double over the next two generations.[3][4][5][6]

Keywords: aspirin, atrial fibrillation, warfarin
