Jahangiri et al 1 from St George’s Hospital, London, described their experience with aortic root replacement in 609 patients operated from 2006 through 2020. Most patients (407) had composite replacement of the aortic valve and ascending aorta and 139 had aortic root replacement with preservation of the native aortic valve, the so-called aortic valve sparing operation.1 All patients were operated on by one attending surgeon. The perioperative and mid-term outcomes were excellent with an overall operative mortality of only 1.6%. The authors quoted a report by the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland, where the overall mortality for aortic valve sparing operations was 4.6% and for composite replacement of the aortic valve and ascending aorta was 9.0%.
