Abstract

Despite advances in therapy, patients with chronic heart failure still have high rates of mortality and hospital readmission. There is a real need for a relatively simple prognostic indicator in heart failure patients so that therapies can be better targeted. Natriuretic peptides have been shown to be powerful prognostic markers not only in the setting of heart failure but also now in acute coronary syndrome patients. Here we review the evidence that natriuretic peptides predict prognosis and evaluate how measuring these peptides might fit into everyday clinical practice.

Keywords: BNP, heart failure, natriuretic peptides, prognosis, therapy
