Caloric and fat intake increases among statin users: a failure to modify lifestyle
Guideline driven treatment of hyperlipidemia focuses on dietary modification in addition to statin therapies. However, temporal trends of dietary modification in relation to statin therapy have not been studied. Examining data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 through 2010, the authors assessed caloric and fat intake over time in statin users versus nonusers in the United States. Both caloric intake (9.6% higher by the end of the study period, 95% CI, 1.8–18.1%; P=0.02) and fat intake (14.4% higher by the end of the study period, 95% CI, 3.8–26.1%; P=0.007) increased in the statin population over the entire study period while their non-statin counterparts saw no …
