Abstract

Objectives To investigate the prevalence and distributing feature of atrial fibrillation (AF) in XinJiang Kazaks adult population.

Methods Four-stage selected random samples aged 30 - 89 years were used to analyse the prevalence and distributing feature of AF in XinJiang area including tacheng, yili,as well as Aletai. we performed an epidemical study of AF. We adopted some methods including inquiring medical history, recording electrocardiogram as well as auscultation to diagnoses AF cases.

Results A total of 22514 adults were surveyed. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation in XinJiang Kazaks adult population is 0.37%. It is increasing with ageing. The prevalence is higher in men than in women (0.59% vs 0.20%, P < 0.01). In patients with atrial fibrillation, 23 of total is valvular atrial fibrillation. Ischaemic stroke was the most frequent type seen among AF cases and the stroke rate among cases with AF was significantly higher than that without (6.0% vs 1.2%, P < 0.01).

Conclusions The prevalence of AF in XinJiang Kazaks adult population is lower than the results from civil level, patients with AF would not like to take the necessary medicine. Therefore, it is advisable to enforce the control of AF.
