Objectives The aim of our study is to explore thecorrelation between intima-media inhomogeneity (IMI) and carotid artery elasticity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2 DM).
Methods 39 Patients withT2 DM and 31 normal control subjects were studied. IMI and IMT mean of carotid artery were measured by an automatic measuring system. Elastic indexes (βmean, Eρ, AC, PWVβmean) of carotid artery were measured by Echo-Tracking. The relationship between the IMI and elastic index and cardiovascular risk factors were analysed.
Results 1) IMTmean, IMTmax and IMI were higher in patients with T2 DM than in normal subjects (P < 0.05) .2) βmean was higher in patients with T2 DM than in normal subjects (P < 0.05). 3) IMI was positive correlated with βmean, Eρ, PWVβmean, age, TG, HDL, FPG and IMTmean (r = -0.372∼0.657, P < 0.05-0.010).
Conclusions The IMI is thought as a new index to reflect the atherosclerotic wall process.
