HSCs are adjacent to sympathetic nerves and have adrenergic receptors, suggesting an interaction between the autonomic nervous system and HSCs (Bioulac-Sage et al., 1990) (Athari et al., 1994). Patients with cirrhosis are known to have elevated blood catecholamine levels and increased sympathetic nerve activity (Esler et al., 1992) (Henriksen et al., 1998). The severity of carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis is higher in spontaneously hypertensive rats with increased sympathetic activity compared with normotensive control rats (Hsu, 1992).
