Baseline characteristics of cases and controls

Values are mean (SD) unless stated. Cases and controls were matched for age and smoking status.
The p values are for comparison between the case group and control group. The two sample t test was used for continuous variables and χ2 test for categorical variables. The p value for C reactive protein was derived from a logarithmic analysis. The characteristics of the entire WOSCOPS cohort are given for comparison. Formal analysis of these variables to predict coronary heart disease risk has been published elsewhere.19
