Pituitary adenomas evade apoptosis via noxa deregulation in Cushing's disease
2022, Cell ReportsCitation Excerpt :Pituitary adenomas are among the most common human central nervous system neoplasms; they are found in >10% of the population (Ezzat et al., 2004; Tjörnstrand et al., 2014) and result in disease states due to hormone oversecretion or due to compression of neural structures (Ikeda and Yoshimoto, 2009; Zaidi et al., 2017). Micro-adenomas causing Cushing’s disease (CD) cause severe morbidity and up to 2.5-fold increase in mortality despite modern treatments (Plotz et al., 1952; Ragnarsson et al., 2019). Unlike most human tumors, benign adenomas of the pituitary gland are monoclonal (Alexander et al., 1990; HERMAN et al., 1990; Schultef et al., 1991) and genetically bland, with a low mutation load (Bi et al., 2017).
Cushing Disease: Medical and Surgical Considerations
2022, Otolaryngologic Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Following endocrinologic diagnosis, surgical intervention is curative; therefore, a pituitary surgery team with experienced neurosurgeons and otolaryngologists is critical for care of these patients. Failure to completely treat CD subjects afflicted patients to ongoing morbidity and reduced life expectancy.5,6 It is critical to differentiate between Cushing syndrome (CS) and CD.
