2010, Pediatric NeurologyCitation Excerpt :Free radicals were implicated in the activation of several signaling pathways, including proinflammatory signaling, during the initiation and propagation of brain ischemia reperfusion [8,9]. Proinflammatory signaling induces the expression of adhesion molecules for inflammatory cells, facilitating their accumulation in target tissues [10]. The infiltration of leukocytes into the postasphyxic neonatal brain is an important contributing factor because it is associated with the local release of oxygen and nitrogen derived free radicals, cytochines, chemiochines, and bioactive lipids [11].
