Left Atrial Electromechanical Conduction Time Can Predict Six-Month Maintenance of Sinus Rhythm After Electrical Cardioversion in Persistent Atrial Fibrillation by Doppler Tissue Echocardiography
2010, Journal of the American Society of EchocardiographyCitation Excerpt :Harjai et al26 showed that the development of LA stunning is not dependent on the amount of electrical energy required for transthoracic CV of AF. Moreover, the electrical shock delivered to the heart during SR or rhythms other than AF or atrial flutter did not result in atrial stunning,27,28 suggesting that electric current per se does not affect atrial mechanical function. From our results, it is not possible to determine whether atrial EMT is influenced by atrial stunning directly by DC shock, although we did not find a significant difference of the amount of DC shock energy or the number of shocks received between the AF recurrence group and SR maintenance group.

2002, American Heart JournalCitation Excerpt :Because of a lack of organized atrial contraction in AFib, the A-wave-related parameters are not applicable during this arrhythmia. However, investigators have used these tools to monitor the progressive resolution of atrial stunning associated with conversion of AFib to sinus rhythm and in other situations in which patients were not in AFib when the electrical energy was administered to the heart.57,58 The incidence of LA stunning is 38% to 80%.
