I am very pleased to take on the role of Editor of theHeart Echo Supplement on behalf of the British Society of Echocardiography, together with Iain Simpson from the Heart editorial board. Firstly, I would like to thank Mark Monaghan, Petros Nihoyannopoulos, and Peter Mills for all their sterling work in previous years. Under their guidance, the supplement has developed into a high quality, internationally renowned journal and I will endeavour to uphold these standards.

The current issue is, I believe, worthy of the quality we hoped for the Millennium edition. The contributions include state-of-the-art reviews of three dimensional echocardiography, tissue doppler imaging, and a salutary comment on the practice of sedation techniques in transoesophageal echocardiography in the UK. I would personally like to thank the authors—not only for the quality of their submissions, but also for their cooperation in adherence to our stringent submission deadlines.

Finally, we could not continue to produce the supplement without the continued support of our industrial colleagues and I express the gratitude of the Society to this year's sponsors, A Menarini Pharmaceuticals and Merck, Sharpe and Dohme. Many thanks for your support.
