Auscultation showed a variable diastolic rumbling murmur. Simultaneous echo- and phonocardiograms demonstrated a floating left atrial thrombus; when this passed into the left ventricular inflow tract and obstructed the mitral valve orifice the diastolic murmur disappeared.
