In the next paragraphs, an overview of the characteristics of these AP variants and of the pathophysiology of arrhythmias sustained by these substrates is given. In his seminal work conducted on a necropsied human heart, Mahaim5 described the NV pathways as myocardial fibers connecting the Tawara node to the supraventricular crest of the right ventricle. Some decades after, other investigators6,7 described the slow-conducting and decremental “nodelike” properties of these pathways.

The fronds disappear as the fibrous body matures. Initially described by Mahaim as paraspecific fibers, these were thought to be capable of producing the “Mahaim” variant of preexcitation.29 From the anatomic standpoint, such connections from node to ventricle and His bundle to ventricle are better described as nodoventricular and fasciculoventricular, respectively (see Fig. 6).

Data are presented as mean ± standard deviation. Univariate analysis was performed by means of the Mann-Whitney U test for continuous variables and by the χ2 test for discrete variables. For nonparametric variables, correlation was tested by using the Spearman coefficient.
