Abstract

Several recent reports1,2 have indicated that Doppler echocardiography, by providing an ultrasensitive modality for studying alterations of blood flow patterns within the heart and great vessels, is capable of unmasking mitral and aortic insufficiency in the absence of murmurs in both the acute and quiescent phases of rheumatic fever. To further investigate this possibility, we evaluated a series of children admitted consecutively for acute rheumatic fever and concentrated our investigation on those presenting only with arthritis.
