Inflammatory and immune mechanisms underlying epileptogenesis and epilepsy: From pathogenesis to treatment target
2020, SeizureCitation Excerpt :It performs its functions via recruitment with specific attachment regions onto presynaptic as well as intracellular membranes [217]. PAF attachment regions have been competently inhibited by PAF blockers, which played a protective role in brain insult, decreased cytokine synthesis as well as COX-2 stimulation in human neurons [218,219]. They also diminished epileptogenesis and epilepsy-associated anomalous plasticity [220].

2007, American Journal of PathologyCitation Excerpt :EGb 761 also has anti-inflammatory effects and protective actions against brain damage through its terpenes and ginkgolides.37,38 The ginkgolide B acts as an antagonist of PAF,37 a factor that induces proinflammatory effects39 and is activated in the HIV-infected brain.40 Besides the free radical theory, inflammation is noted in the brains of HIV-infected individuals and of Tat transgenic mice.17,41
Synaptic lipid signaling: Significance of polyunsaturated fatty acids and platelet-activating factor
2003, Journal of Lipid ResearchCitation Excerpt :The observation that PAF-receptor antagonists elicit neuroprotection in the gerbil brain ischemia-reperfusion model (120) suggested that PAF may work at the synapse. In this model, the ischemia-induced accumulation of free PUFA was decreased by the PAF antagonists that were also neuroprotective by restoring cerebral blood flow (120). The ischemia-induced PUFA release is believed to result from synaptic phospholipase(s) A2 activity (116).
