2012, Emergency Medicine Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Kaposi sarcoma is an AIDS-associated malignancy that is 300 times more common in HIV-infected patients than in patients with other immunocompromised conditions.45 Before the use of ART, retrospective autopsy studies showed a prevalence of 12% to 28% of disseminated Kaposi sarcoma involving the heart.46,47 HIV-associated metastatic Kaposi sarcoma lesions are typically small (<1 cm) and involve either the pericardium or subepicardial fat.33,37
Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome in the Infant
2011, Infectious Diseases of the Fetus and Newborn InfantA small pericardial effusion is a marker of increased mortality
2011, American Heart JournalCitation Excerpt :We have previously suggested that capillary leak syndrome may be responsible for the increased incidence of small pericardial effusions. The capillary leak syndrome includes generalized serous fluid extravasation that usually involved pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial surfaces.15-17 In another unrelated study, other inflammatory markers such as interleukin 6, interleukin 8, and interferon γ were found to be associated with the presence of an idiopathic pericardial effusion.18,19
