Aneurysms of the aorta: Ascending, thoracic, and abdominal and their management
2022, Cardiovascular PathologyValve-Sparing Root Replacement in Elderly Patients With Annuloaortic Ectasia
2019, Annals of Thoracic SurgeryCitation Excerpt :The Bentall procedure is the gold standard for the elderly population because aortic valve lesions become more complex with age. For example, cusp calcification or cusp thickening due to longstanding hemodynamic stress and tissue degeneration as well as the diameter of the aorta increase as age advances [11, 12]. The durability of a bioprosthetic valve in the aortic position improves as patients’ age progresses, and valve-in-valve procedures for the treatment of structural valve deterioration of bioprostheses have also been developed.
Intraleaflet hemorrhages are a common finding in symptomatic aortic and mitral valves
2017, Cardiovascular PathologyCitation Excerpt :Study materials were retrieved from the pathology archives and consisted of hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained sections and paraffin-embedded tissue blocks. Macroscopic images of all valves were available since in our hospital valve specimens are photographed routinely prior to further processing as part of the diagnostic procedure [12] (Figs. 1A, 2A and B, and 3A and B). Prior to embedding, all valve tissues were routinely fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin, and representative tissue blocks were taken perpendicular to the free margin of the leaflets.
Valvular aspects of rheumatic heart disease
2016, The LancetCitation Excerpt :Rheumatic heart disease is an uncommon cause of isolated aortic valve disease, occurring more frequently as mixed aortic and mitral valve disease. Either stenosis or regurgitation might be noted in patients, but mitral regurgitation or mixed disease are more common.75 The early disease process is characterised by leaflet prolapse, resulting in a loss of height of the cusp tissue and commissures.
