2014, Cardiac Electrophysiology ClinicsCitation Excerpt :Another seminal report found elevated D-dimer levels, a marker of thrombogenesis, in patients with AF but not in controls in sinus rhythm; the presence of associated organic heart disease in this study was not associated with significant differences in fibrin D-dimer levels, attributing the hypercoagulable state to AF independent of its risk factors.15 Interestingly, the high D-dimer levels associated with AF have been shown to be reduced by both anticoagulation16 and cardioversion to sinus rhythm.17 Further indicators of increased thrombin generation in patients with AF, and particularly in patients with AF-related stroke, include increased levels of prothrombin fragments 1 and 2, thrombin-antithrombin III complex, and von Willebrand factor (vWF).18
