Prediction and Management of Recurrences after Catheter Ablation in Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure
2019, Cardiology ClinicsCitation Excerpt :In patients in whom rate control with AADs or catheter ablation has failed, AV node ablation (AVNA) is an option, although this is often a last resort because it necessitates permanent pacemaker implantation and the patient will be pacemaker dependent. This has documented efficacy and has been shown to reduce physician office visits, episodes of HF, and subsequent use of AADs, including in older patient cohorts.80–82 A meta-analysis comprising more than 6700 patients showed improvement of symptoms and quality of life with AVNA compared with medical therapy, with no difference in all-cause mortality.83
