Abstract

This study demonstrated the age-related changes in pulmonary venous flow velocities during 36 months of life. These resulte suggest that age-related changes in the D and S wave reflect the maturational or developmental alterations in both LV and left atrial diastolic properties, especially during the relaxation process.

Pulsed wave Doppler (PWD) and tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) of mitral inflow is an integral component of that assessment. We and others have recently demonstrated some of the weaknesses in the available pediatric nomograms for functional echocardiography [5–27]. The main weaknesses relate to small sample size, inconsistent methodologies for the performance and normalization of measurements, and availability of limited data in neonates and infants [5,28–35].

Although most of the published studies on diastolic function in pediatrics addressed this issue, several studies did not evaluate normalized measurements.37,41,42 In the remaining studies, normalization of diastolic parameters involved different variables, including age,7,8,10,11,13-15,18-23,25,26,29-32,35,36,38,39 body surface area (BSA),18-22 weight,13,25 heart rate,8-10,12-15,18-20,30 stroke volume,14 and left ventricular (LV) diameters.14,15,18 Most studies revealed linear relationships between diastolic parameters and age, the most frequently evaluated variable used for normalization, with only a few exceptions.25,26
