Abstract

This study documents a decrease in the incidence of postoperative pericardial effusions following open heart surgery in children from 53% to 85% in published reports to 13.6% in this study. The incidence of postpericardiotomy syndrome has also decreased from a reported 25% to 30% to 2.3% in this study. These findings may reflect improvement in surgical and myocardial protection techniques.
