Clinical introduction
A young man hospitalised following blunt abdominal trauma 1 day prior was referred for the evaluation of tachycardia. He complained of mild generalised abdominal pain but denied history of any cardiac complaints. His pulse rate was 114 beats per minute and blood pressure was 96/70 mm Hg.
